Lighting up the Night: Understanding Your Trailer Light Configuration

For many, trailers serve as a home away from home. Whether you’re hauling a camper for a weekend getaway or a cargo container for your business, it’s important to understand your trailer’s light configuration. Even if you’re just running errands around town, your trailer should be equipped with all the necessary lights so you stay safe and compliant on the road.

Because of the different kinds of trailers out there, the number and type of lights on each one can vary. The basic configuration must conform to state and federal regulations, which can differ in detail from region to region. Generally however, trailer law requires that your trailer have functioning brake lights and turn signals, a system of tail lights and side marker lights, and a license plate light.

Break lights typically come in a pair and are positioned at the rear of the trailer, slightly below eye level. Turn signals are also located on the back, with the left one on the left and the right one on the right. The more traditional circle-shaped tail lights are usually red and also come in pairs — one on each side of the trailer’s midline. Side marker lights may be square and amber or white, depending on the state requirements. Lastly, the license plate light will ensure that your vehicle is easily identifiable at night.
