How To Use A Multimeter As Circuit Tester

By | December 27, 2022

Do you need to test the circuits in your home, but are new to using a multimeter? Don't worry - it's easy to get started. A multimeter is a tool used to measure electric current, resistance, and voltage in an electrical circuit. By using a multimeter, you can quickly identify potential issues in your circuits and make repairs, saving you time and money. Here's how to use a multimeter as a circuit tester.

Before you begin, make sure you're familiar with the safety precautions associated with electric current. Use extreme caution when dealing with wires and electricity. Once you'are sure you're using a heavy duty, closed-style multimeter to test circuits, here are a few steps to help you get started.

First, check for power and confirm the switch is on. Disconnect all wiring from the circuit you’re checking and remove the cover of the circuit. Set the multimeter to the voltage range that’s appropriate for your circuit. This can usually be found in the owner's manual. Once the meter is set, you can attach the multimeter leads to the hot wire, neutral wire or ground wire. Hot wires carry 120 volts and should be red. Neutral wires are white, while ground wires are typically green or bare copper.

Next, flip the circuit breaker to turn on the circuit you want to test and carefully touch the two meter leads to the wires at the same time. The multimeter will display readings depending on what mode you've selected. If the multimeter displays readings that are different than the voltage level listed in the owner's manual, then there may be an issue with the circuit you're testing. Make sure to double check the settings and re-test to ensure accurate results.

Finally, you'll want to put everything back where it belongs. Once the cover is reinstalled, use the multimeter to make sure the circuit is off. After that, you can turn the circuit back on and enjoy knowing you successfully tested the circuit using a multimeter.

With a bit of practice, using a multimeter as a circuit tester isn't difficult. Keep safety a priority and you'll be able to quickly identify and troubleshoot electrical problems around your home.
