Wiring Diagram Symbol Meanings

By | January 31, 2023

Understanding wiring diagrams and their symbols are key to becoming a master electrician. But with so many different types of symbols and diagrams available, it can be daunting to try and decipher them all. This blog post focuses on what some of the more common and frequently used wiring diagram symbols mean, so that you can better understand how your electrical system works.

At the most basic level, a wiring diagram is a visual representation of the physical connections between electrical components, such as wires, switches, and outlets. It is often referred to as a schematic or a circuit diagram. Wiring diagrams use symbols to represent each component on the diagram. Knowing what each symbol stands for can make understanding and troubleshooting circuits much easier.

The two most common symbols used in wiring diagrams are rectangles and circles. Rectangles are used to designate receptacles and switches. Circles are used to show the connecting wires and their points of connection. Dotted lines show that the wire is not connected, while the solid lines are for the components which are connected. Additionally, each wire has a distinctive color code that makes it easy to identify in the diagram; red typically represents positive and black represents negative.

In addition to rectangles and circles, other commonly used symbols include arrows, upside down triangles and squares. Arrows are used to denote a path of current flow and show the direction of the flow of electrons. Upside down triangles signify grounding or negative terminals, while squares designate resistors, capacitors, transistors, or any other components that are part of the circuit.

Other symbols commonly found in wiring diagrams are diamonds and stars. Diamonds represent bulky components, such as fuses and breakers, while stars indicate connections between multiple components and can be used to trace current flow. All of these symbols and many more are organized into standardized sets called IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) symbols.

A great way to familiarize yourself with wiring diagrams and symbols is to get a book on the subject. With this knowledge at hand, you'll be well on your way to becoming an expert in electrical wiring!
