A vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) is an electrical switching device that uses a vacuum to interrupt electrical current flow. While conventional circuit breakers utilise an arc-extinguishing medium (such as air, oil or SF6 gas) to interrupt the electrical current flow, VCBs make use of vacuum as its arc-extinguishing medium. It is important to note that the higher the rating, the more expensive the switch.
Another important factor when choosing a VCB is the type of circuit breaker. There are two main types of VCBs - air-gap and non-air-gap. Non-air-gap VCBs are more cost-efficient and have a high short-circuit interrupting capacity, making them suitable for applications that require a large amount of electrical power. On the other hand, air-gap VCBs are more reliable and safe, but tend to be more expensive.
