Ignition Circuits of a Car: What They Are and How They Work
Your car's ignition circuit is made up of many components, working together to ensure that your engine can start properly. It's a complex system and understanding how it works can be difficult. However, learning about the ignition circuit can help you better diagnose and fix any issues that arise.
The ignition circuit is comprised of several different parts, all of which work together to create the spark needed for combustions in the engine. This starts with the ignition switch-mounted on the dashboard of the vehicle. The switch sends an electrical signal to the coil, or secondary winding. It allows the current to flow through the circuit, where it is stepped up in voltage.
The resulting high-voltage current then passes through the kernel coil, which is connected to the spark plugs. When the voltage coming out of the kernel coil surpasses the threshold, it triggers the spark plug to fire, igniting the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber, powering the engine.
Additionally, a distributor is also used to evenly distribute the voltage output by the coil to each cylinder. Without it, the engine won’t run efficiently, as each cylinder will only receive a fraction of the voltage needed for combustion. Without the distributor, the engine would struggle to start and may not even run properly at all.
Finally, there’s the ignition module, which is the central control point for the entire ignition circuit. It’s responsible for regulating the voltage and ensuring that it’s sent to the correct spark plugs and cylinders. A defect in the module can cause a variety of issues with the ignition system and prevent your car from starting correctly.
By understanding the components of an ignition circuit, you’ll be able to diagnose and repair problems that arise more quickly and effectively. It has many moving parts, but with a deeper knowledge of its workings, you’ll be able to make sure that your car always starts up properly.
