How To Read Aircraft Wiring Diagrams

Learning to read wiring diagrams is an important skill for airplane mechanics. A wiring diagram is a complete visual representation of the electrical system of an aircraft. It shows all the wiring in the aircraft, including the connection points of components, such as switches, motors, lights and other systems. Understanding how to read aircraft wiring diagrams is essential for any mechanic working on aircraft systems.

To begin understanding a wiring diagram, start by looking at the symbols used to represent different components. Symbols are used for switches, lamps, resistors, relays, grounding points, fuses and circuit breakers, among many others. Once you understand the symbols, you can start piecing together the larger picture. Wiring diagrams are generally laid out in a hierarchical manner, with components grouped together in separate diagrams for easy comparison.

Next, learn to decode the lines connecting the various components. Generally, a dashed line represents a switch in the “off” position, while a solid line indicates one that is “on.” You'll also see arrows representing the direction of current flow. These will help you identify what each component is powering, and when it is activated.

It's also important to understand any internal wiring in the aircraft. Internal wiring can be seen as a series of loops, and you'll have to look closely to see where each loop connects to the next. These connections, along with the dashed and solid lines, will help you to trace the path of the current, which will show you which switches and components control certain systems.

Finally, when you're done reading the diagram, take the time to trace each wire yourself to check that all connections are properly made, and that none of them have been missed. This is especially important if you're repairing something, as any errors in the wiring could cause serious problems.

Learning to read aircraft wiring diagrams may seem daunting at first, but with enough practice, it can become second nature. This knowledge can be invaluable for anyone who works on aircraft systems, so don’t be afraid to take the time and effort to master it.
