A relay is an electric switch that uses an electro-magnetic field to open or close a circuit. A schematic diagram is simply a visual representation of how the components within a relay fit together. Each component is represented by a symbol, typically a box or circle, which is reviewed in detail in the schematic.

At the heart of a relay is the coil. When current flows through the coil, this generates a magnetic field that in turn closes or opens the switches within the schematic. This allows the device to control other components or circuits within a system.

Alongside the coil, the schematic diagram will also include the various contacts. These are used to open and close the circuit. In most cases, there will be two sets of contacts. The input contacts are connected to the power source, which actuates the relay when the coil is energised. The output contacts provide power to the desired circuit.
