How Does A Latching Relay Circuit Work

By | February 9, 2023

What is a latching relay circuit? It’s a circuit that uses a type of relay that stays activated once it has been triggered, even after the power is removed. This type of circuit is often used in applications such as switch control automation, access control, door locks and more.

Let’s look at how a latching relay circuit works. The circuit consists of a set of contacts that are connected together to form a single switch. When someone triggers a control signal, the contacts close and apply an electrical current to the relay coil which causes the switch contacts to move. This opens the main contact, which starts the latching process. So, when the power is removed, the relay remains active.

To deactivate the latching relay circuit, a second control signal is required. This signal is typically sent over a wire and applies an opposite voltage to the relay coil. This causes the switch contacts to return to their original positions, closing off the main contact, and deactivating the circuit.

The main benefit of a latching relay circuit is its ability to stay active with only a few moments of power. This allows for a greater amount of energy savings compared to traditional switching systems, since the energy used to keep the contacts open is much less than the energy required to open them. Additionally, the latching relay requires only two signals to activate or deactivate, making it much easier to use than conventional relays and switches.

Overall, latching relay circuits are an efficient and cost-effective way to control switches with minimal energy use. They are particularly useful when controlling larger systems, such as automated doors, access control systems and other types of switch control automation. Although they are more complex than traditional relays, they provide an efficient and reliable method of controlling switches and are becoming increasingly popular in various industries.
