Fog lights may seem like a minor upgrade to your vehicle, but they make a much bigger difference than you might think. Not only do fog lights improve visibility in rain and foggy conditions, but they improve the visibility of pedestrians and other vehicles during the night. Unfortunately, fog light wiring can be complicated and intimidating, especially if you’re not the most experienced car enthusiast. However, installing fog lights without a relay is actually quite simple.
First, you’ll need to locate your fog light connections. In many vehicles, these are located in the engine bay near the fuse box. From here, you’ll need to run the wires that connect the fog lights to the switch in the interior of the car. The wires can be run through the firewall or through a grommet; which ever is the easiest in your particular car.
Once the wires have been run and are connected to the switch, it’s time to begin wiring the fog light itself. Start by connecting the ground wire (black) to a chassis ground. This will provide a secure connection and ensure that the fog lights receive the power necessary for them to operate. Next, connect the positive wire (red) to the 12V power source. You can use an existing fuse in the fuse box, or you can tap into an existing power source.
For the final connections, attach the white wire to the fog light switch and the yellow wire to the parking light switch. This will allow the fog lights to turn on and off when you switch on the parking lights. Once all of the connections have been made, you should then test the fog lights to ensure that they work properly.
Installing fog lights without a relay is a great way to improve your visibility when driving in rainy and foggy conditions. By following the steps outlined above and being sure to double-check your work, you can be sure that your fog light installation goes smoothly and is as safe as possible.
