Circuit Drawing Rules

By | March 13, 2023

Whether you’re an amateur or a professional, if you’re working on electrical circuitry, you need to follow certain drawing rules. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has established standard guidelines for the drawing of circuit diagrams, commonly called circuit drawing rules. Understanding and following these circuit drawing rules can help make your work easier, safer and more reliable.

At the heart of these drawing rules are symbols, which are standardized across the world. These symbols represent components of an electrical circuitry such as a battery, switch, fuse, fan, transformer and the like. Using different symbols to represent a specific component helps keep the circuit drawing neat, accurate and easy to read, resulting in a better understanding of the circuit.

To make sure that the circuit diagram is easy to interpret, all components should be placed symmetrically. Connections should be clearly marked and labeled. Components should not overlap one another and arrows should be used to indicate the flow direction of current. For clarity, the wiring should be kept in a straight line, without any loops or zig-zags. Symbols should also be consistent throughout the circuit.

The IEC’s circuit drawing rules also require that connectors and terminals should be clearly indicated. Connecting wires between the components and the terminals should be indicated with a line and should include arrows to show the direction of current. Electrical measurements like voltage, current and resistance should also be clearly labeled.

Additionally, these circuit drawing rules require that the frames and housings of devices should be clearly indicated. This helps visitors and inspectors determine the exact location of a device and its components.

Following the IEC’s circuit drawing rules can help make your electrical circuitry project successful, efficient and safe. It can protect your circuit from errors, reduce debugging time and provide a standardized way of communicating technical information. By understanding and adhering to the IEC’s circuit drawing rules, you can make sure that your schematics and drawings are accurate and understandable.
