You Me At Six, We Are The Ocean and All Forgotten, live from York Fibbers.
Well, the last time we met these boys it went something like this:
But, back to the present and the second date of their second headlining tour. Standing outside this, on first impressions, quite insignificant venue, you aren't really sure whether you're waiting for a bus or queuing up for a night of entertainment. When Josh and Matt, lead vocalist and bassist of You Me At Six, appear and place themselves in another of the numerous bus stops, you are somewhat reassured. Clearly the other fans around us feel the same, as the band members' little journey causes choruses, squeals, and waves of fans running across the verge. Looking over to this gathering, you feel almost proud of how far this young band have come so far. These five boys are embarking on events such as Give It A Name, and tonight - as was last night in Liverpool - is a completely sold out show on their headline tour. This feels like real, fresh, young talent and the guys are so grounded: with their increasing success you would think it might go to some teenagers' heads but no, it's easy to see that each one of them is genuine and boy, do they know how to create a good night! The line up tonight consists of All Forgotten, We Are The Ocean, and headliners, You Me At Six. Personally I can't wait, and have been waiting for these southern beauties to all appear up north for a long time! We start with All Forgotten, getting a little collaboration from our very own Max Helyer to kick start the night and they well and truly nail it. The crowd tonight may be quite quiet but the band sure isn't. There's something in those breakdowns that is addictive. After asking us what's on our goddamn mind, they announce their demo is on sale at the back of the venue for a mere one pound?! Surely not? Now there is an investment to be made! York's gathering is warming up and We Are the Ocean make their way to the stage. "Let's get messy!" are our instructions, before the lead vocalist Dan leans over into the crowd and powers the lyrics through the mic. Merely the vocals themselves are impressive, to say the least. The two vocalists' are so different and yet execute the balance between the harsh undertones and warm rounded melodies skillfully. When combined together it produces something really quite special. Almost like a kinder bueno; crunchy exterior with smooth delights in the centre. Something in the size of York Fibbers makes the music sound so much more intense. As those blastbeats echo around the room it's more like you're apart of the music than observing a show. "SHOUT IT LOUD!" Under the lights you know you should be singing along with these words, and if not, you're sure to go home and be ready for the next time. They end with 'Nothing Good Has Happened Yet' and go out leaving their mark. The song is clearly a crowd favourite and has everyone wanting more. As the bands' gather around the merch stands, you can see a certain magnetism drawing the girls in the crowd towards them, then, as You Me At Six start to sound check, the room suddenly seems to fill out. There's a buzz around the place and you can feel the excitement building in the atmosphere. They start their set and straight away I find myself in a mass sing-a-long to 'You've Made Your Bed.' The bands faces' light up as they step back and the crowd take over, singing word for word, "Who'd drink to that, I wont drink to that". Tonight we are also graced with the band's new material and it goes down well. Most of us already know the lyrics to the latest myspace release 'If I Were In Your Shoes,' which only came through our speakers a mere two weeks ago. It's then I get the impression that, if this is what "sex with your hot girlfriend" sounds like, I am missing out! We are then introduced to Henri, You Me At Six's merch boy. "This is Henri, he sells our merch and he's French!" and he is invited onto stage to take photos of the crowd. If you hadn't guessed already, all these guys are friends and all the bands are somehow linked. Boy, there must be some good genes in that town! 'Save It For The Bedroom' kicks up a fuss, as Josh leans over the barrier and becomes practically part of the crowd, showing exactly how Fibbers is certainly one of the more intimate venues in Grande Britannia. You just get the feeling, as you watch them all up there, singing the words, you want to be apart of it. The night ends with 'The Rumour,' a song that will always hold memories of Charlie Simpson arriving onstage as guest vocalist, after one particular night at Leed's Cockpit. But, this time the song is yet again changed and still holds an edge, as it transforms into their very own rendition of Rhianna's top hit 'Umbrella.' Tonight, You Me At Six have well and truly outdone themselves, and what better way to end a night? With infectious melodies and lyrics alongside tripping beats and good looks, you know these boys are going to go far. Spread the word people, you don't want to miss out! |
