'You'll Rebel To Anything (As Long As It's Not Challenging)'

For anyone who is listening to this band for the first time, there are probably many words that come to mind when trying to describe Mindless Self Indulgence: crude, ignorant, just plain lazy? But, being a band that prides itself upon causing controversy, they’re probably happy to take on the labels. On first listen, perhaps ‘You’ll Rebel To Anything’ is just a catchy record, with some offensive lyrics. However, there’s something about every track on this album; each incessant booming bassline buries itself inside your brain. Up until you can’t help but hum the tune, sing the chorus, or even go as far as learning the raps Yes, the raps. In today’s genre of music, we can find ourselves seeing bands repeating each other before they’ve even released a sophomore record, but as this band’s second full-length release, we can clearly see that not only are they breaking the mould, they’re creating their own new one. What are the rules with MSI? Well, it seems the only rule is to have none.

With fusions of almost every genre imaginable, this album has something for everyone, especially if they hold a secret fetish for glowsticks. However, it‘s safe to say that listeners should place their tongue firmly in their cheek at all times, because this could be a bumpy ride for the fainthearted. But, in all honesty, when you get down to it, this album is pure fun and filled to the brim with energy: perfect for a live translation to the stage.

The punk-rock-rave-rap group that hail from New York have re-released this album for the UK with several extra tracks, as well as a remastered playing order, further emphasising the genius that is this CD. And with live shows throughout Britain this October on their headlining tour, as well as a stint supporting My Chemical Romance this past month, it’s safe to say that the band have been splitting audience opinions nationwide.

Love it? Hate it? Whatever. Welcome to the future: I hear it’s all about rebellion.
